Central Avenue, passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2011.Born and raised in Iva, SC, Shirley was a daughter of the late James William Bruce, Sr. and Cora Elise Sutherland Bruce. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Iva and had retired from Rocky River Mill. She was involved with Iva politics beginning as a Town Council Member and later being elected as Mayor. Shirley had a special love and admiration for Iva and its people and will always be a part of Iva's history.She is survived by her husband of fifty-four years, Elmer 'Fudd' Powell of the home; her son, James Winifred 'Winnie' Powell and his wife, Nancy of Iva, SC; three grandchildren, Tammy Maxwell, Stephanie Young, and Ashley Powell; two great-grandchildren, Chelsie Bellew and Charlie Young; brother, James William Bruce, Jr.; sisters, Willise Cheek, Angeline Gaines, Geraldine Gable, Alice Willis and Sue Butler, and her beloved pet, Rascal. She is also survived by numerous foster children. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 11, 2011 from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm at the First Baptist Church of Iva with the Funeral Service beginning at 3:00 pm officiated by the Reverends Jerry Gray and Roger Estridge. Interment will follow in Iva City Cemetery. The family will be at the home of her son, 106 Turpin Road, Iva, SC. Flowers are optional.
