Shirley WoodyJuly 25, 1924 - March 15, 2012TOWNVILLE, SCShirley Jane Haviland Woody, age 87 of Townville, SC passed away at her residence on March 15, 2012.Born in Newark, NJ, Shirley was the daughter of the late Dean August Haviland and Ethel Estelle Craig Haviland. She attended the public schools in New Jersey and graduated from Lasell College in Auburndale, MA. After meeting at a USO dance she and her husband, the late Esteen Melvin Woody, married in 1946 and had an amazing marriage for over sixty years. Shirley worked as a medical and administrative secretary while living in New Jersey. She was a sixty year member of the DAR. She also was a former member of The League of Women Voters, The North Hunterdon Regional District School Board, The Miami-Dade County Women's Club, The Bethlehem United Presbyterian Church, and The Hunterdon County Democratic Committee and served as a Miami-Dade County School Reading Specialist.In addition, after moving to Townville, SC in 1988, Shirley became an active member of Townville Presbyterian Church serving as elder, and as a volunteer secretary, and devoted a large amount of her time and care to the TPC community. She was honored by the Foothills Presbytery as a Senior Superlative. Shirley greatly contributed to the research and publication of her late husband's book, 'From Nazareth to Townville; 3 Miles, 3 Centuries.' One of her last projects was to encourage the erection of a State Historical Marker on Highway 24 recognizing TPC history. Both she and Mel were active with Meals on Wheels of Anderson County.She is survived by her son, Luke Jay Woody and his wife, Antonia Carideo Woody of New York; daughter, Susan Dean Woody Logan and granddaughter, Helen Dean Logan both of Pennsylvania; sisters-in-law, Frances J. Woody Parker and her husband, George E. of Townville, SC and Arleene Ratcliff and her husband, Tom of San Diego, CA; numerous nieces and nephews and many well-loved friends and relatives. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her son-in-law, Donald Alexander Logan, Jr.The family would like to especially thank Drs. Harter, Raval and Doster, An Med Hospital and Hospice of the Upstate for all their care and support.The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 in the Townville Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall from 5:30 pm until the time of the celebratory service which will be held at 6:30 pm with the Reverend Peggy Swann officiating. Mrs. Woody's ashes will be interred in Union Cemetery, Hackettstown, NJ beside those of her beloved husband.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621 or Townville Presbyterian Church, P.O.
