Obituary

Spencer Shackelford Leavitt passed away while sleeping on the morning of January 5, 2018 at his home near Pendleton, South Carolina. Spencer had a true passion for the outdoors and found the Upstate to be the perfect place to spend a life. He was the son of his parents, Brooks and Frances Leavitt of Martinsville, Virginia, born on July 27, 1954. He was one of four siblings, with two brothers and one sister. Spencer proudly graduated from high school in 1973 at St. James School in Hagerstown, Maryland. He attended Clemson University where he accumulated a host of lifelong friends, many of whom would often returned for dove hunts, duck hunts and Clemson football games. He graduated in 1977. At Clemson, Spencer studied history, economics and business. He later successfully applied his skills in his banking and wealth management in Greenville, SC. He eventually retired from Hilliard Lyons in Greenville, South Carolina. He loved to talk about history, almost as much as about the stock market. He was a Phantom of the Opera aficionado and he could recite every line from Lonesome Dove from memory. His gardening skills were unrivaled. Not only was he known for his vegetables and fresh produce, but also for his abundant sunflower fields. Spencer was a lover of nature and a soft human, yet a giant of a man. He was a natural raconteur, a crack shot wingshooter, an expert on all things ducks (Spencer was admired by all for his knowledge of waterfowl) and, above all, a truly expert fly fisherman. He always wanted his guests to be in the best spot on the river, just as his Dad had taught him. His family remembers many great fishing stories about Spencer, including one trip to Alaska where Spencer disregarded all the advice of the guide and caught more fish than all the rest combined. Eventually the guide commented, "there is nothing I can do for Spencer." One of his crowning achievements was the Pendleton marsh that he, his brother, and a few close friends created as a haven for ducks, a truly special place that brought friends together on many, many occasions. But most of all, Spencer will be remembered as a loving son, a fine father, a great brother and a special friend. Spencer was preceded in death by his Father, Brooks Russell Leavitt, whom he greatly admired. He is survived by his Mother, Frances Shackelford Leavitt of Martinsville, his daughter, Alden Hale Leavitt of Clemson, brother Brooks Russell Leavitt II of Chapel Hill, NC, brother Dana Hastings Leavitt and his wife Anna Lee Leavitt of Pendleton, sister Frances Leavitt Lee and her husband Kenneth Burdette Lee, Jr. of Hillsborough, NC, Julie Sherbert, his longtime loving partner, John Henry Lee, his close friend and confidante, and his sidekick Winston, his beloved Springer Spaniel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at The Rice Fields adjoining the property of Dana and Anna Lee Leavitt, 6240 Liberty Hwy., Pendleton, SC.
