Obituary

Steven Virgil Carey (Steve) of Anderson, South Carolina passed away July 14, 2022. He was born February 16, 1948 to the late James S. and Connie McGuire Carey of Anderson, South Carolina. Steve graduated from Crescent High School in 1967 and was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He began his career with his father in his contract painting business and later worked with him in their family antiques business and auction company in Anderson and Fair Play, South Carolina. Steve continued in the antiques business all of his life. He owned and operated several successful antique stores in Upstate, South Carolina. As an antiques dealer, he was also acclaimed as an expert in the field of furniture restoration and refinishing. Many people, near and far, brought furniture to be restored or refinished by him. In addition to his love of antiques, he loved all Clemson sports. He was an avid fan of NASCAR and he enjoyed fishing as a favorite pastime. He was widely known by friends and family for his delicious boiled peanuts. Steve leaves behind his wife of twenty-nine years, Martha Price Pitts Carey, his son, Shannon Carey (Stacey), his grandson, Brett Carey (MaKayla), sister, Penny Capria (Pat), Jamie Hampton (Wade), brother, James (Bo) Carey, and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many dear and cherished lifelong and new friends in the local community and antiques business. Steve was known to always help anyone, especially his friends, when in need. Steve never met a stranger and he was noted for his quick wit and sense of humor. Even during the last days of his failing health in the hospital and rehab centers, he was able to bring smiles to the caregivers around him. A service will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Steve will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to PAWS, 1320 US-29, Anderson, SC 29626.
