It is with deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Sylvia Ann Smith Durham, 83, of Pendleton, SC. She died on Saturday June 20, 2026, at the Rainey Hospice House.
Sylvia was born on July 5, 1942, in Greenville, SC and was a daughter of the late James H. Smith, Sr. and the late Bonnie Young Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James H. Smith, Jr.
She was the oldest of four children and spent her life in the community she loved. A graduate of Pendleton High School, she played basketball and carried the same determination, strength, and competitive spirit throughout her life.
Sylvia was a woman who believed in hard work. Throughout the years she worked in healthcare, hospitality, bookkeeping, office management, food service, and family business operations. Whether working at Simmons Chevrolet, Anderson Hospital, area hotels, restaurants, or owning and operating a trucking company, she approached every job with dedication and pride. She never shied away from responsibility and spent her life doing whatever needed to be done for the people she loved.
Though only 4 feet 11 inches tall, Sylvia's personality filled every room she entered. She was strong-willed, independent, and wonderfully sassy. Those who knew her best understood that behind the tough exterior was a woman with an immeasurable capacity for love. Above all else, Sylvia loved her family. As the mother of an only child and grandmother to an only grandchild, she devoted herself completely to those she loved. She spoiled them shamelessly and found joy in caring for them every day. The memories created
A devoted Baptist, Sylvia's faith was a guiding force throughout her life. She trusted God through both blessings and hardships and found strength in His promises. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now healed, restored, and at peace in the presence of her Savior.
She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Evans Williams; her granddaughter, Anna Marie Williams; her special son-in-law, Raymond Edward Williams; her sister, Elizabeth "Beth" Walker and husband Larry Walker; her brother, David Smith and wife Lisa Smith; numerous beloved nieces and nephews; and many extended family members and friends.
Though many knew her as Sylvia, to those who loved her most she was simply "Mema." She leaves behind a lifetime of memories, a family who adored her, and a legacy of faith, strength, laughter, and unconditional love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 12:00-12:45 pm at The McDougald Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 pm in the Chapel with Rev. Dwight Greene officiating. Burial will follow at Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery in Liberty, SC.
