Verna Young Mayfield passed away Saturday, February 6, 2021 at Summit Place in Anderson, SC. She was 95 years old and the widow of David Harold (Jack) Mayfield. Born on November 28, 1925, in Wray GA, she was the daughter of the late Melba Connelly Young and the late Lee Kelly Young. She was an active member and Sunday School teacher for many years at Orrville Baptist Church.
During World War II, she worked as a rivet inspector on B-29 bombers at the Bell Aircraft Plant in Marietta, Ga, where she met her future husband Jack. After the war ended, they married and moved to his hometown of Anderson, SC.
She worked for several Anderson textile mills, The Remnant Shop, and most recently for Gallant Belk/Belk for over 24 years. She enjoyed working in her yard and gardens; doing Brazilian embroidery, quilting, and sewing; and traveling.
She is survived by her son Randy Mayfield (Ann) and their son David Mayfield and his daughter, Jo Lee Mayfield, and their daughter Kelly Glenn (Matt) and their daughter, Whitney; niece Arlene Young, reared in the home, and her daughter Brooke Sanders and her daughter Blair McAlister and her children, Connelly and Jack; her sister Corrine Young; her brother Greg Young (Doris) and his son Jeff Young (Tracey); and her brother Preston Young; and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jack; her nephew Don Young, reared in the home; two sisters, Bobbie Sangster and Bebe Henry; and four brothers, Arthur, Arleigh, Elton and Robert.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will have a private service and burial. Friends may pay their respects and sign the guest book on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 from 10 am until 4 pm at the McDougald Funeral Home.
