Obituary

Vivian Jeanette Ross Napp passed away peacefully in Belton, SC on May 12, 2016 from stroke complications. She was 92. Born June 14, 1923 on a farm to Nellie and Cassius Ross in Warrensburg, New York, Vivian grew up with three brothers and a sister and lived through the Great Depression. Her father died shortly after her birth. All three Ross boys, Cliff, Carlton and Burnel (Bud) served during World War II. Her older sister, Twila, volunteered with the Red Cross. Brother Bud was a 19 year old Seaman aboard the first USS Triton submarine, the 201 boat when it went down in March, 1943. When she heard of the Triton's sinking, Vivian went to the Navy recruiter and enlisted in the Navy. She proudly served three years during the war as a Storekeeper 1st Class. After the war, and like millions of other veterans, she returned to civilian life and went to college. She met her future husband, Leonard Napp at the University of Miami and they eventually married April 9, 1949. Both loved music and Vivian played the organ and piano while Leonard sang. They had been married 51 years when he passed away on April 24, 2000. They moved many times during their marriage but their love of the water kept them near the Atlantic Ocean. They passed on that love to their three children: Barry Napp (Brenda) of New Braunfels, TX, Barbara McLeod (Pat) of Belton, SC and Lori Schoonover (Charlie) of Vero Beach, FL. Vivian grew up playing all sports, usually with her brothers and became a very good athlete playing softball, basketball and field hockey for Crown Point (NY) High School. After raising her family, she decided to go back to her sports background, competing at the county, state and national level at the Senior Olympics games. She won many first place medals and awards in badminton, table tennis, running and other track events in her age group, competing for over 10 years until she was 88. She was a good sport, popular with her teammates and gracious in both victory and defeat. Vivian was a warm, personable and friendly person who made friends easily. She passed on those traits to her children along with her love of animals. There was always a kitten, puppy or turtle in the Napp household. Vivian is survived by her three children, four grandchildren, Joshua McLeod, Jeremiah McLeod, Jacob McLeod and Marlene Deacon. She also has seven great grandchildren, Patrick McLeod, Wendell McLeod, Dutch McLeod, Matthew Miller, Shawn Miller, Evan Deacon and Morgan Deacon. Vivian was very proud of her family and her "grands" and their children were the love of her life. She is also survived by two special nieces, Jan (Casey) of Clearwater, FL and Joyce (Mike) of Dade City, FL and a sister-in-law Marie Ross of Jacksonville, FL as well as a host of nephews and nieces, cousins and many, many first and second cousins. Vivian was predeceased by her husband, Leonard, her parents, Nellie and Cassius, her sister Twila, brothers Cliff, Carlton and Burnel and many, many friends she made through the years. Visitation is planned for May 21, 2016 from 5-7 p.m. at the McDougald Funeral Home, 2211 North Main Street, Anderson, SC with military honors funeral service planned May 22, 2016 at 3 p.m. in the same venue. Final interment will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Florence National Cemetery, Florence, SC.
