Obituary

William Glenn Gurley, Sr., age 78, of 240 Graylyn Drive, passed away at his residence on Friday, January 8, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Iva, SC, on March 29, 1937, he was the son of the late John C. Gurley, Sr. and the late Myra Milford Gurley. For sixty years, he was the devoted husband of his beloved wife, Emmie Shelton Gurley of the home. Following his graduation from high school, Mr. Gurley attended Anderson College. He along with his brother, Del, started Glendel Builders. Later, Mr. Gurley founded Gurley Construction Company, building hundreds of homes in Anderson, Clemson, and Abbeville. He also built and operated A Storage Place of Anderson. Glenn was a member of Hiram Masonic Lodge in Anderson, and was a faithful and devoted member of St. John's United Methodist Church, where he served as Chairman of several church committees, including Church Council, Building Committee, and the Board of Trustees. He had served as Vice President and then President of his Sunday School class. He also taught in a children's Sunday School Class and worked in Youth Ministry at the church. Mr. Gurley also served as a District Trustee of the United Methodist Church. Glenn served on the Board of Trustees of the Anderson County Health Department. In addition to his wife, Emmie, Mr. Gurley is survived by two sons, William G. "Bill" Gurley, Jr., and his wife, Diane, of Anderson and Brian L. Gurley and his wife, Erin, of Goldsboro, NC; a daughter, C. Carol Gurley of Anderson; a brother, Franklin Delano Gurley and his wife, Barbara, of Anderson, and a sister, Lucia Atkins of LaGrange, GA; and three grandchildren, Charles Austin Gurley, Caitliln Gurley Cullen and her husband, Christopher, and Landon L. Gurley. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, and a very special friend, J. Byron Burns. In addition to his parents, Glenn was preceded in death by a daughter, Emily Ann Gurley; a brother, John C. Gurley, Jr. and a sister, Ann Gurley. Following a private family burial, a worship service to celebrate and honor the life of W. Glenn Gurley, Sr., will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at 2 p.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Dan Batson officiating. The family will be at the residence, and will receive friends in the Parlor at St. John's United Methodist Church following the service.
