Obituary

Walter Ray Hammond, age 68, of 154 Lifestyle Lane, went to his Heavenly home on Friday, October 16, 2015, upon his death at MUSC Charleston, with his loving family by his side. Born in Anderson County, SC on August 3, 1947, he was the son of the late Allie General Hammond and the late Flossie Snowflake Hiott Hammond. For twenty-four years, he was the loving and devoted husband of Phyllis Raye Reaves Hammond of the residence. Mr. Hammond was a graduate of Palmetto High School, Class of 1965. He proudly served his country in the US Navy where he was deployed for three tours of duty in Vietnam. Ray was an excellent craftsman, accomplishing numerous wood construction projects during his lifetime. He received an associate of arts degree in accounting from Greenville Technical College. At the same time, he was employed in the material management department of John D. Hollingsworth on Wheels in Greenville, a position he held for twenty years. For the last fifteen years, he found much enjoyment and satisfaction in his role as a realtor for Coldwell Banker Hugh Durham and Associates. Mr. Hammond was a member of NewSpring Church. In addition to his wife, Phyllis, Mr. Hammond is survived by a daughter, Theresa Ann Cogdell of Anderson; a son, Michael Anthony Todd and his wife, Miranda, of Loris, SC; four grandchildren, Taylor and Tabitha Cogdell, and Scott and Eric Todd; three sisters, Lucille Eller of Williamston, SC, and Ellen Rackley and Catherine Griffis, both of Greenville, SC. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hammond was preceded in death by a brother, Allie Monroe Hammond. A Graveside service to celebrate and honor the life of Mr. Ray Hammond will be held on Monday, October 19, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, with Mr. Hugh Durham officiating. The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Sunday, October 18, 2015, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Contributions in memory of Mr. Hammond may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
