Walter Alexander Mayfield, Jr., of 404 Oakmont Drive, entered the Church Triumphant on Thursday, October 26, 2017, upon his death at AnMed Health Medical Center. Born in Anderson on November 2, 1934, he was the son of the late Walter Alexander Mayfield, Sr. and the late Elizabeth Ellis Mayfield. For fifty-one years, he was the loving and devoted husband of the late Luta "Bootie" Sullivan Mayfield until her death in 2010.
Mr. Mayfield was a graduate of Anderson's Boys High School, Class of 1952. He was a 1957 graduate of Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, and received a master's degree in education from Clemson University in 1972. Walter proudly served his country in the US Army. He served as Associate Director of Admissions at Clemson University and later as Systems Analyst for Undergraduate Admissions. He retired from Clemson after twenty-five years of service. Mr. Mayfield served eight years as a member of the Anderson School District V Board of Trustees. He was an active and faithful member of Central Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, elder, and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class and the Centralites Seniors organization.
Mr. Mayfield is survived by two sons, Walter A. Mayfield, III and his wife, Charlene of Anderson, and Charles Sullivan Mayfield and his wife, Shea, of Greenville; two daughters, Elizabeth Mayfield Bowen and her husband, Chris of Anderson, and Ann Mayfield Jaskwhich and her husband, Michael, also of Anderson; a brother, Bobby Mayfield and his wife, Penny, of Anderson; five grandchildren, Charles Sullivan Mayfield, Jr., Rebekah Eugie Mayfield, Torrence Goldston Mayfield, John Daniel Bowen, and Catherine Douglas Jaskwhich. Walter also leaves behind a very special friend, Ruth Roose of Anderson.
In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, "Bootie" he was preceded in death by a grandson, Edward Ellis Mayfield.
Following a private burial, the Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2017, at 3 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Dr. David J. Bailey officiating. The Elders of Central Presbyterian Church are invited to serve as the Honorary Escort. The family will be at the home of Walter and Charlene Mayfield, 1404 Stonehurst Drive, Anderson, SC 29621, and will receive friends at Central Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall following the service on Sunday.
