OBITUARY: with FLAG WALTER PRICE SPIRESApril 10, 1923 - March 25, 2012Anderson, SC:Walter 'Price' Spires, age 88, passed away at the Magnolias of Anderson, Sunday, March 25, 2012. He was born April 10, 1923 in Clayton, Alabama to the late Joel and Leah Price Spires. Price joined the U.S. Navy in 1942. On July 1, 1947, he married Mary Faire Powell. She lovingly followed him from base to base and coast to coast during his military career. In 1963, he retired from the Charleston Naval Base and the family moved to Anderson, SC. Price attended Clemson University and received his Bachelors of Science degree and Masters of Arts degree while teaching at Tri-County Technical College. Upon completion of his education, he began his 'calling', teaching Electronics at McDuffie High School. He retired for the second time in 1993. Price was an active member, deacon, and Sunday school teacher at Concord Baptist Church.He is survived by his beloved Mary, daughter and son-in-law Leah and Kevin Mitchell, son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Gigi Spires, and daughter and son-in-law Becky and Wayne Rogers. He also leaves the five brightest and most beautiful grandchildren, Shanna Mitchell Johnson (Chad), Trey Spires, Gracie Spires, Jessica Rogers, and Zach Spires, and most special great-grandchildren, Chloe and C.J. Johnson. He is also survived by his sister, Alice Davis, brother-in-law Charles Powell (Jane) and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sisters, Jewel Woods, Ruby Jean Stevens, Pearl Campbell and their spouses and children.The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 11 AM in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Reverend Bob Marcaurelle officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Military Honors.The family will receive friends on Monday, March 26, 2012 at the funeral home from 5:00 until 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621. The family would also like to thank Hospice of the Upstate, Interim Hospice and the loving staff at Magnolias Assisted Living for their care.
