William Greer Albergotti, 94, died Monday, February 26, 2018, at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson. Mr. Albergotti was born in Aiken and reared in Columbia. He was the son of the late William Greer Albergotti, Sr. and Mary Beulah Argoe Albergotti of Columbia; and the grandson of Andrew Durant Argoe, Lodoskie Sturkie Argoe, William Greer Albergotti, and Mary Hutson Salley Albergotti, all of Orangeburg County. Mr. Albergotti had retired from Milliken and Company. Surviving are his wife, Lila Fretwell Albergotti of the home; children, Samuel Fretwell Albergotti (Moyer) of Anderson; Raymond Mackay Albergotti (Andre) of New York City; Mary Albergotti Bowman of Staunton, Va., and Paul McAlpin Albergotti of Anderson; grandchildren, Katherine Hamer Preston (Rob) of Harrisonburg, Va., Frederick Charles Hamer, III (Charity) of Waynesboro, Va., William Greer Albergotti, III of Charleston, Martha Fairey Albergotti of Spartanburg, Claudia Brownlee Albergotti of Spartanburg, and Philip Gaston Albergotti (Allen), of Greenville; great-grandchildren Kailee Morehouse Eldred, Hunter Mason Hamer and McKenzie Brooke Hamer. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Albergotti Williams. Mr. Albergotti enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 while a student at Clemson College, and was deployed to Japan for a year during the occupation. He returned to the United States in 1946 and graduated from Clemson the following year. He remained in the U.S. Army Reserves until his retirement, with the rank of Major, in 1965. With a lifelong passion for genealogy, Mr. Albergotti traced his family history to the early settlement of South Carolina and to pre-medieval Tuscany, Italy. In 1733, his ancestor, Ulysses Anthony Albergotti, immigrated to Beaufort County from Arezzo, in Tuscany region, where Albergotti cousins continue to reside in the ancestral home built in 1240. Mr. Albergotti was the author of two books of family history, Albergotti Creek: The Chronicles of a Colonial Family of the South Carolina Sea Islands, and Abigail's Story: Tides at the Doorstep. He was an authority on the histories of coastal South Carolina and Anderson County. Mr. Albergotti was active in Anderson civic affairs, and maintained an unbroken record of attendance at Anderson City Council meetings from 1998 until 2014. He was a devoted member of Grace Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry. In his later years he was a regular for breakfasts at Roy's Diner, where he developed many treasured friendships. A memorial service for Mr. Albergotti will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2018. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. The family is at the home of Moyer and Sam Albergotti.
