Berry, Sr.May 18, 1922 - March 29, 2009ANDERSON, SCWilliam (Bill) Jesse Berry, Sr., age 86, of Anderson, passed away March 29, 2009 at Rainey Hospice House after a brief illness. He was a native of Huntsville, Alabama and was the son of the late Frank and Bessie Berry. He was member of Pope Drive Baptist Church and a former member of Garner Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Usher and Sunday School teacher.Bill joined the Anderson Police Department in October 1950, retiring after 37 years of service. In 1939 he joined the Army and during WWII was involved in campaigns in Europe where he earned the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. While stationed in the states he served as driver for then Colonel and later General George S. Patton. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division.After the war he joined the Army Reserves, retiring after 42 years of active service in both the Army and the Reserves.Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Juanita Kay Berry; children, William J. Berry, Jr. (Theresea) of Fayetteville, NC, Jan Pennell (Jim) of Anderson, Lynn Redmond (Bob) of Tallahassee, FL, Becky Hicks of Columbia, SC, and Patti Seaborn (Scott) of Anderson; six grandchildren; three step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Earl Berry and a sister, Bobby Jean Phillips both of Huntsville, Alabama; brother-in-law Robert A. Kay (Barbara) of Greenville; sisters-in-law Doris Huff of Athens, GA and Evelyn Kay of Anderson, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends on Monday, March 30, 2009 at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at The McDougald Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Reverend Mack Tester. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum with Military Honors provided by the Upstate Veterans Honor Guard.Flowers are accepted. Memorials may be made to Pope Drive Baptist Church, 2510 Pope Drive, Anderson, SC 29625 or to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
