William Hugh Durham, 86, of Sandy Springs, SC, passed away Friday, February 5, 2021 at AnMed Health Medical Center. Hugh was a son of the late William Murphy Durham and Lillian Marie Kelly Durham. Hugh was born in the Fants Grove Community, which at that time was a part of Oconee County, one of twenty-five children. He grew up smart, tough, and not afraid of work. He served in the US Army and received his education while enlisted. He and his wife, June, owned and operated Durham's Grocery, a staple on Hwy 76, for many years. Not only could you purchase fresh apples, but you could also fill your gas tank, fix a flat tire, or fish in the well-stocked pond behind the store. After he sold the store, Hugh worked at Smith's Exxon in Pendleton. With his love of cars, he was a natural mechanic. He was an avid fisherman and especially loved his dog, Marley. Hugh was a faithful member of Fants Grove Baptist Church where he served in numerous leadership positions. If you ever attended Fants Grove, you would certainly have been met by Hugh, with a broad smile, hand shake and invitation to come again. Hugh loved his Savior, Church and family and was proud to tell you just how much each meant to him. He touched so many lives and was an inspiration of faith to us all. Hugh is survived by sons, Nathan Durham, Mark Durham (Jennifer), and Kenny Durham; daughter-in-law, Michelle Durham; brother Lawrence "Peewee" Durham (Cora Lee); grandchildren, Joy Durham, Paige Durham and Christopher Bobb; 8 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Hugh was predeceased by his loving wife, June Garland Durham; son, Robert K. Durham; and 23 siblings. Hugh will lie in state on Monday, February 8, 2021 from 10 am until 4 pm at the Mcdougald Funeral Home-Pendleton Center, 1001 S. Mechanic Street, Pendleton. All are welcome to view and sign the guest register. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at Fants Grove Baptist Church from 12:30-1:30. The funeral service will follow at 2 pm. Rev. Jerry Durham and Rev. Bob Castro will officiate. Hugh will be laid to rest in the church cemetery beside his wife, June. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fants Grove Baptist Church. Social distancing will be observed and masks are recommended.
