KINNEY August 26, 1925 - April 11, 2007ANDERSON, SCMr. William Austin Kinney, age 81, husband of Violette Smith Kinney of 19 Anchor Point, Anderson SC, died Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at his residence.Born in Jamestown, NY on August 26, 1925, Mr. Kinney was a son of the late Marcus Charles Kinney and Florence Marie Mowers Kinney. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II having served in the 6th Marine Division in Okinawa as Corporal. He was a pitcher for the Marine Corps All-Star Team in the Pacific Division and his catcher was Gill Hodges. He pitched for the Minor League teams, the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Braves, and retired as Police Captain for Amtrak of New York. He was an avid bowler, a life-long Methodist, church trustee and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Anderson, SC. Mr. Kinney was a man of immense character and integrity yet very humble. Survivors include his wife, Violette Smith Kinney of the home; daughter, Deborah Kyle Kinney Soltis of Shelby, NC; sons, Reverend William Lee Kinney and his wife, Peggy of Pine Bluff, Arkansas and Nathan Brent Kinney of Suffern, NY; six grandchildren, George Soltis, Shawn Soltis, Stefanie Arocho, Daniel Lee Kinney, Elizabeth Anne Kinney and Maria Alexandra Kinney and three great-grandchildren, Chloe Heavener, William Austin Arocho and Grace Marie Soltis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Marcus Kinney.The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at 1:00 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church officiated by the Reverend Frank Lybrand. Interment will follow in Anderson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Friday, April 13, 2007 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.The family will be at the residence.Flowers are optional. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1809 N. Main Street, Anderson, SC 29621. The family wishes to express special thanks to the staff of Hospice of the Upstate.
