WILLIAM PICKENS MURPHY, JR. December 18, 1947 - September 12, 2013 ANDERSON, SC William Pickens Murphy, Jr., age 65, of Anderson, passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at the Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, SC. Born in Anderson, he was the son of the late William Pickens Murphy, Sr. and the late Mary Palmer Murphy. He was a 1966 graduate of T.L. Hanna High School. He graduated from USC in 1970 and received his Master's degree in accounting in 1972. Billy proudly served his country in the United States Army National Guard. He was a project manager at Tennico in Columbia since 2005. He was an avid cook and restaurateur. He loved his family and never met a stranger. Billy was an eternal optimist. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Anderson. He is survived by his two sons, Ernest Pence Murphy and his partner Christopher Alan Smith, of Atlanta, GA and Marshall Pickens Murphy and his wife Margaret Stuart Murphy, of Greenville, SC and their son, William Pence "Penn" Murphy; two brothers, Ernest P. Murphy and his partner Randall Chumley, of Atlanta, GA, Marshall J. Murphy and his wife Elizabeth of Greenville, SC and their children, Margaret and Blythe Murphy; a sister-in-law, Eugenia Pence DeHart and her husband Vernon of Columbia, SC; Martha Rankin, who Billy affectionately called, "Aunt Martha", of Anderson; a nephew, Charles Baxter Lee and his wife Catie of Nashville, TN and their sons, Charles and Ben; a niece, Catherine Benson DeHart of Washington, DC; and special cousins, Jane Rankin Jones, Ranny Rankin, and Johnny Rankin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Evelyn Boggan Pence Murphy in 2012. The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Central Presbyterian Church with Dr. David Bailey officiating. The family will gather for a time of visitation immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of Central Presbyterian. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
