Obituary

Funeral services for Woody Clifton Barfield, 76, will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, December 1, 2017 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hartsville, SC. Bishop Heber Watson will officiate with burial in Kelleytown Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Thursday at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home, Hartsville, SC. Woody was born February 13, 1941, a son of the late Woodrow and Geraldine Barfield, in Hartsville (Kelleytown), SC. He loved growing up in Kelleytown with his two younger brothers, Johnny and Steve, and has regaled family and friends with stories of that time for years. Woody was a highly decorated student and athlete at Hartsville High School - recruited as a football player by renowned programs from coast to coast, and drafted by the New York Yankees in baseball. With the desire of family for him to be close to home so that they could see him play, Woody enrolled to study and play football for the University of South Carolina. (He became a founding member of the USC Lettermen's Association, which he remained a member of until today.) While a student there, he married Marjorie Watson, his high school sweetheart, and began a family, which would become the hallmark of his life. His lifelong pursuit of education and knowledge (BS - USC, and MA - Furman University) would be the other hallmark of his legacy to the family. After graduating from USC and working briefly in Columbia (Columbia High School), Woody returned to Hartsville and continued a coaching and teaching career that would span more than 35 years and touch (literally) thousands of lives. He worked at his alma mater, Hartsville High, as well as Lamar High, Thomas Hart Academy, Holly Hill Academy, Crescent High and Pendleton High (Anderson, SC), and eventually at Cheraw High School. He would finish his distinguished career there as an Assistant Principal, which he absolutely loved. Woody's return to the Pee Dee for work allowed he and Marjorie to build their dream home on his family property in Kelleytown. With all of his children - Cliff (Kelly), Christi (Dennis), and Gretchen (Bryan) living in the area, Woody proudly hosted them and his beloved grandchildren - Kaci, Andrew (Lyndsi), Sarah, Courtney, Neal, Emily, Anna, Dylan, Emma, and Landon - along with as many extended family and friends as would come. His home became what he had intended it to be - a haven where all family could be welcomed for holidays or any family event, in the same way that the original family home (which still stands on the property) had always been. Woody Clifton Barfield was a member of the Hartsville Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and is survived by Marjorie, his wife of 56 years, to whom he was eternally sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple; and all of the children and grandchildren mentioned above, and his two brothers. He is a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother; and in every way, he is a hero. Memorials may be made to Chesterfield County Administrators Assoc. Scholarship Fund, c/o Dennis McDaniel, McBee High School, Box 218, McBee, SC 29101.
