- Avoid scattering ashes within 100 yards of roads or trails.

- When scattering ashes in inland waters, a permit is required under the Clean Water Act.
- Ashes scattered at sea must be at least three nautical miles from the shore. The EPA requires notification within 30 days after the scattering. Also, any flowers or wreaths used should decompose naturally, so avoid non-biodegradable items.
